AIR Kargil station inaugrated

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad today dedicated satellite uplink station and FM transmitter to the people of Ladakh at AIR Leh. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Azad stressed on the need to upgrade transmission and programme production capacity of AIR and Doordarshan in the region. He appealed to the people to make Ladakh attractive from cultural and developmental angles so that the educated youth could stay in the region and give their contribution in the overall development. The CEO Prasar Bharati, BS Lalli in his address said that a state of the production studio will come up in Leh within next two months. Mr. Lalli also announced installation of transmitters in the areas of the region which are not within the reach of AIR so far. Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Mr. Thupstan Chhewang demanded upgradation of Medium Wave transmitter's capacity from 20 KW to 200 KW and FM Transmitter's from present 100 watt to 10 kilowatt and filling up the vacancies in AIR and DDK Leh from among the local people. The MLA from Leh and Commerce and Industry Minister in the state cabinet Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, and Chief Executive Councillor in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, LAHDC, Leh Mr. Chhering Dorje also spoke on the occasion. Our Correspondent reports that the satellite station, which is 29th in the country, will facilitate relay of programmes originating from AIR Leh through its relay centres at Khaltse, Diskit, and Nyoma to reach the people in the far flung areas on Indo-Pak and India-China borders. The FM transmitter will cater to information and entertainment needs of the local population by relaying FM Rainbow India programme which is very popular in Leh.
